Effect:

There have been a huge amount of methods since Mr BERGLAS presented this effect in the mid 70's. For this manuscript, Gerard wanted a 100% hands off solution; direct, practical, with NO sleight of hands and doable on stage or close up and, if possible without knowing the card nor the number. The result is not “another card trick” but more of a mentalism approach to this classic plot.

In all of them, the performer places a boxed deck of cards in full view and won't touch it again.
Example 1: The performer explains that there are many ways to select a card and a number; they can be selected completely at random without looking, they can be simply thought of, or it can be a mixture of the two. For instance, the card can be selected and the number can be thought of, or vice versa.
Whatever option they choose, a CARD and a NUMBER (between 1 and 52) will be either chosen or thought.
The 'Prediction Deck' is opened by a spectator who counts to the number. They turn over the card they arrive at, and amazingly, it is their chosen (or thought of) card.
Example 2: The participant thinks of a card. They remove it from a deck of cards and show it to the audience. They then visualize a number between 1 and 52 (there is no restriction and the chosen number can be kept a secret).
They then take the deck and count to their secret number: incredibly, it is their card.
Example 3: The participant eliminates 51 cards from an immaterial deck of cards (no force or equivoque are used). Next, they visualize the numbers between 1 and 52 in their mind until one number is clearly seen. They now pick up the prediction deck and counts to their secret number: it is the card.
Example 4: A set of business cards with cards written on their face are handed out for close examination. They're then shuffled by a member of the audience and spread face down on the table.
The participant selects a card without looking at the face, signs it and keeps it safe with her signature in full view.
52 business cards, now with a number between 1 and 52 written on them, are then given to another participant for close examination. These are also shuffled and spread again, face down on the table. The participant selects a card without looking at the face, signs it and keeps it safe as well with the signature in full view. Nobody knows what the card is, nor the number.
The card and the number are revealed and shown to everybody with signatures on the back.
A spectator now takes the prediction deck and counts to the number: it is the card.

Although it does not meet all the criteria of a « perfect ACAAN » ,this method still has many advantages :

- Very simple to perform ( from beginner to advanced ) .
- Can be done with different sleights (no PASS) for the card control and for the counting (no Second Deal).
The "simplest" variation is hands off.

A Spectator thinks of a card and then shows it to the audience, or writes it down on a business card,notepad,..) as a proof for later .

- SCAM ACAAN
"An ACAAN without cards...but with a surprise ending !"
The Performer places a prediction envelope on the table with a deck of cards .He will not touch them again .
He takes some bank notes and asks the Spectator to THINK of a SUIT , then a VALUE and finally of a NUMBER between 1 and 52.Each time, the Performer bets some money on the table and tries to guess the spectator's replies..
At the end, the Spectator opens the envelope and it contains the card and the number thought by the Spectator ! The card is also revealed in a surprising manner with the bills.
(Optionnally, the deck is then counted and the card is found.)

Among performers, you have those who are tired of the « Any card at any number » effect and those who like it . Among the hundreds ,if not thousands, of ACAANs that have been created since David BERGLAS in the mid 70's, you have good ones and other ones that do not even meet half of the criteria .
The real effect should be :
« Name a card »

« Count to that number »
and amazingly it should be the card.
This version is exactly as described...except for the last part ! It will not be the card (- :
After all it's normal . There are 51 chances over 52 that it won't be the right card .
Somebody else can try again with another number ,and it will miss .
…
and so on .
Until somebody asks the performer to give it a try .And this time it will work !
100% hands off ! Can be done with JUMBO cards . Reset is not straightforward in some occasions . Much fun to perform close up or stage !
An impromptu version is also provided .This one can be done with a borrowed or shuffled deck and is excellent for table hopping .

A Spectator selects a card face down and signs its back.
Another Spectator selects a card face down , from 52 blank cards that carry a number from 1 to 52 on their back. He signs its back also.
The card and number are revealed and the cards are counted by a Spectator in a prediction deck in full view all the time.It is the card.
Everything is given for examination.
